A Baldwin Eggstravaganza

The winter jacket hoods were up as the snow was coming down last Saturday in Baldwin Park, but that didn’t stop dozens of children from picking up colorful eggs during the Baldwin Civic Asssociation’s third annual Eggstravaganza.

The cold weather certainly kept some people away, but BCA President Karen Montalbano said she was happy with the turnout considering the snow flurries. A Town of Hempstead building in between the tennis courts and basketball courts was utilized as an area for people to keep warm before and after egg hunts.

Even though the weather caused some changes, Montalbano said the event “adapted and it worked out very well.”

Some children got their faces painted while members of the Baldwin Fire Department played a game of pick-up basketball with others. The main attraction that the weather caused to cancel was the pony rides. Montalbano said the ponies were not too fond of temperatures in the mid-30s.

Montalbano said the BCA didn’t want to postpone the event and still wanted to give kids the chance to hunt for eggs before Easter. Many BCA members volunteered at the event, including Jessie Velasquez, the organization’s fundraising chair, who, Montalbano said, made the event a success.

All-in-all though, the flurries simply provided a nice memory for many Baldwin children who came out, met the Easter Bunny, took part in an egg hunt and, above all else, had fun.
