A few words from a Gen Xer to Gen Y

It’s a terrible thing when older people attempt to categorize younger people. We’re all individuals, with our own talents, desires, hopes and dreams.

Tens of thousands of millennials have stood on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq in defense of our nation. These young men and women were not forced into military service. They joined of their own free will, knowing that they would likely be put in harm’s way. They were ready to sacrifice their lives –– the most selfless act of all.

As an editor at a paper that hires many 20-somethings, and as a Hofstra professor, I interact with millennials nearly every day. The overwhelming majority are industrious and kind.

So, to our graduates, I say this: Stay true to thine own selves, to paraphrase Shakespeare, and let the bluster about your generation blow in one ear and out the other. Work hard and have fun. Before you know it, you’ll take over the world.

According to Time, Generation X spans 1961 to 1980. It includes, I am proud to say, President Obama, who was born on Aug. 4, 1961.
