A rip-roaring read

Meadow kids partner up for program that focuses on the fun of reading

Jammies, a stuffed animal or two and, most importantly, books.

Those were the ingredients for the successful kickoff of a reading program at Meadow Elementary School in Baldwin.

The kids showed up, appropriately garbed, for the start of the Pick a Reading Partner program. In the program, administered by the PTA, parents are asked to read with their children for at least 15 minutes a day. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words.

Experts say the PARP progpram encourages children to develop reading habits while allowing them to discover the fun of reading. It also fosters family communication and relationships and lets parents monitor their children’s progress.

But none of that mattered to the youngsters at Meadow last Friday night. Choices of literature ranged from Lucille Colandro’s “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell” to “How Much Is a Million?” by David Schwartz. And no one fell asleep too early.
