Hammerstein, the author of “The Hammersteins: A Musical Theatre Family,” co-hosts the evening, offering commentary on the songs being performed and insights into Oscar Hammerstein’s legacy and his relationship with Rodgers.
Joining Wiley and his orchestra on stage are four of Broadway’s talented young performers, all of whom are making their Philharmonic debuts. They bring a dynamic range of talents to their appearance with the orchestra: Rob Gallagher, who has thrilled Broadway audiences as Javert in “Les Misérables” and as Emile de Beque in the Tony Award-winning revival of “South Pacific”; Mandy Gonzalez, who originated the role of Nina Rosario in the “In the Heights,” which won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, and recently wrapped up a successful run as Elphaba in “Wicked”; Jeremiah James, who currently stars as El Gallo in the long running off-Broadway hit “The Fantasticks”; and Jennifer Hope Wills, who has been wowing audiences on stage as Christine in “The Phantom of the Opera” and as Eileen in “Wonderful Town.”
To add to the New Year’s Eve revelry, in what is the evening’s signature ending, concertgoers can see the Philharmonic’s own New Year’s Eve ball drop at the close of
evening.
“We came up with a program that touches all the great songs,” said Wiley, and we are thrilled with how it came out. It should be a truly special night that features our Philharmonic at its best. And adding the personal stories from the Hammerstein years makes it even more appealing. Plus, with a 7:30 to 9:30 concert time, it fits in perfectly with everyone’s New Year’s Eve plans.”
“This is a wonderful way to end the year, as we look forward to great things to come in 2014. We are gearing up for more in the spring as we look ahead to next year.”
The concert is expected to sell out once again, with limited seats remaining. Those interested in attending are urged to not delay in purchasing their tickets.
