High school athlete awarded college scholarship

For the past four years, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Sports Medicine Program has provided athletic trainers for local high school sport teams and last year, awarded scholarships to students at seven different high schools. Winthrop’s scholarship program has grown, and this year they partnered with 10 high schools including South Side High School in Rockville Centre, where the winner is Harrison Kravis.

“We are excited about the growth of our program and the opportunity to provide athletic trainers to these districts. It’s very rewarding to give back to the community by honoring a student that will be following their dreams in the field of medicine or an allied field,” said Stephen Wirth, PT, Administrative Director of Sports Medicine at Winthrop.

Senior students from the partnering high schools who were applying to a college program in healthcare or a related field and had a GPA of 3.0 or higher were eligible. As part of the application process, students were asked to submit an essay supporting why they should be selected and explaining how athletics has been a part of their goals for future contributions in healthcare. All applications were reviewed by the Winthrop Sports Medicine Committee. One student from each of the partnering high schools was then selected to receive a $500 scholarship.

“We congratulate all the scholarship recipients and are looking forward to next year’s applications,” said Wirth.
