Homecoming party for Baldwin

Only three Nassau County football teams stand unbeaten with six games in the books. Two of them, defending Long Island champions Carey and Lawrence, are no big surprise, but not even Baldwin head coach Steve Carroll could’ve predicted the other.

“I just wanted to make the playoffs and go from there,” Carroll said. “We had three wins last year and didn’t look so hot in camp this August. But we’ve improved a lot and beaten some really good teams.”

The Bruins (6-0), seeded eighth in the preseason, wowed an overflow Homecoming crowd of more than 1,000 last Saturday with a convincing 41-13 victory over longtime Conference I rival Freeport in the 76th all-time meeting between the teams. They rushed for 340 yards, got a huge play on special teams late in the first half, and blanked the Red Devils (4-2) in the second half.

“It feels great,” said senior Jared Warner, who returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give Baldwin a 27-13 lead with 3:06 left in a wild second quarter that featured five touchdowns, including three in a span of 36 seconds. “It doesn’t get much bigger than beating Freeport on Homecoming,” he added.
