Herald Endorsement

In town’s 5th District, give Sweeney a full term

When Erin King Sweeney was appointed to the Hempstead town board in January, a lot of people said she got the job simply because of who her father is — U.S. Rep. Peter King. She says she understands the criticism, and it has made her work that much harder.

King Sweeney, a Republican, joined the board earlier this year following the retirement of Angie Cullin. We have seen her grow in the position ever since. She is visible throughout her district, and has been trying to learn what makes each community unique. Since her appointment, she has tackled many local issues, including the stalled revitalization of Grand Avenue in Baldwin and plans to replace a burned-out gas station in Seaford with a new one.

A mother of two, King Sweeney understands the importance of preserving the suburban character of our neighborhoods while looking to find ways to increase affordable housing options, especially in downtown areas. And, acknowledging concerns that have been raised about the town’s animal shelter, which is in her district, she said she has responded by visiting the facility unannounced on several occasions to see the operation for herself. We like the fact that she takes residents’ concerns seriously.

Her opponent, Democrat Michael Reid, has a long and distinguished career in emergency services. From volunteering in the Merrick Fire Department to teaching EMS classes for North Shore-LIJ, his accomplishments are too many to name. We certainly believe he would do a good job if he were elected, and would bring a thoughtful, compassionate approach.

But King Sweeney has worked hard and showcased lots of energy over the past 10 months, and we’d like to see what she can do in a full four-year term. We endorse her for the 5th Council District seat.
