Students at Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School received a special visit and fire safety lesson from the Island Park Fire Department on Oct. 7. Presentations took place by grade level throughout the day with kindergarten starting first.

Kindergartners assembled in the gymnasium and heard from Fireman Dominick Sinnona, a 26-year veteran with the fire department. Sinnona presented safety tips and discussed what to do in an emergency situation. He urged students to always remember to dial 911 and brought in a fire detection alarm to talk about its purpose.

Firemen Brian Mannix and Joe Morrone dressed in their bunker gear and demonstrated what they do in a fire. The students also watched a safety video with characters Timon and Pumbaa and went outside to tour the firetrucks. Fireman Michael Spina showed the students the hose and discussed its importance with Sinnona.
