A motorcycle rider, Diony Antonio Lopez, 27, crashed into a school bus near the corner of Merrick Road and Lancaster Avenue on the morning of Oct. 7. Lopez, who was riding a 2012 Honda motorcycle, was killed. The bus, operated by Atlantic Express Transportation, contained 23 children, but none of them were injured during the incident.

According to police, the driver of the bus, a 64-year-old female, was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses at the scene told the Herald that Baldwin Firefighters performed CPR on Lopez, and that he was taken to the hospital under police escort. But police said the Freeport resident succumbed to his injuries at 8:40 a.m.

An investigation into the crash caused police to close a portion of Merrick Road for several hours early this week to preserve the scene.
