Sani2 helps Shed the Meds

Sanitary District No. 2 hosted Operation Shed the Meds last Saturday for residents to discard their unused, unwanted or expired medication in a safe and responsible manner.

The Nassau County Police Department was on site through the day and took three large trash bags full of medications.

Doug Wiedmann, of Sani2, said the program was a great success because these medications were removed from the waste stream, ensuring they are properly disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Residents also had the opportunity to shred their important documents in a safe manner.

“It was a great day,” he said. “We have tremendous turnout from the residents dropping off medications for proper disposal and paperwork to be securely shredded.”

The event was part of National Drug Takeback Day, sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s Office of Diversion Control. The day is intended to raise awareness of the growing threat from prescription opioid painkillers, which, experts say, are largely responsible for the current heroin epidemic.
