“God has given [Ida] many gifts which she shares with all,” Josephine, who’s known as Jo, wrote in remarks she prepared for her mother’s 100th birthday. “I’m proud to say she’s my mom.”

Jo Miller, Ida Genna Scaduto’s daughter, prepared a list of major events that occurred at the time her mother was born:

  • Woodrow Wilson became president.
  • Richard Nixon was born.
  • The zipper was invented.
  • Airplanes were a recent phenomenon, and were popularly called “flying machines.”
  • Homes were illuminated by burning gas mantles and generally had outhouses in the backyard.
  • “Icemen” would deliver 200-pound blocks of ice to people’s homes for refrigeration.
