Football wins, arts festival boosts community spirit

On Sept. 22, the Hewlett High School varsity football team defeated Glen Cove in the homecoming game. The Bulldogs were losing early on but came back in the second half of the game. The crowds were lively and spirited during the game. The cheerleaders and marching band both had great performances during the halftime show.

The seniors won the banner decoration, with their banner inspired by Marvel. The sophomores came in second place with their Power Rangers-themed banner, followed by the Junior DC banner in third, and the freshmen Incredibles-themed banner.

An exciting event coming up is the Arts Below Sunrise festival. On Sunday, Oct. 14, October 14, Broadway will be closed between Irving Place in Woodmere and the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library for the eighth annual festival. The event was started in 2011 by the Youth Leadership Forum out of Hewlett High. The main goal of the festival is to bring the communities together.

A new addition to the festival in recent years has been the incorporation of various STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities. In previous years, Dr. Brian Terry, the Hewlett-Woodmere School District’s science chairman, has made bottle rockets with children and brought the robotics team to show how the robots work. This year, there will be a dog costume contest and a parade with the dogs. The festival will also include craft and food vendors, live music, artists, dancers, rides, and games.

The festival is planned chiefly by the Youth Leadership Forum, which receives a lot of help from the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools Endowment Fund. The Forum students have been working tirelessly to plan the events for the festival, which is expected to be a great success this year.

The fall sports season is winding down, as teams are finishing off their regular season games and some are advancing to the playoffs. After the pep rally, Hewlett High School students have been looking for ways to boost spirit around school and maintain the excitement for the end of the sports season.
Student Council is planning to maintain school spirit by having dress-up days during Halloween week. New high school principal, William Galati, has been working hard along with the students to ensure that a warm and spirited environment is maintained at Hewlett.
