Neighbors helping neighbors, a haircut house call

Michael Abramov, owner of Deluxe Cuts in East Meadow, did not hesitate to make a “house visit” to give a haircut to one of his costumer’s best friends, nor did he hesitate when he learned the friend was staying at NYU Winthrop Hospital.

Chris Sprague had been unable to leave the hospital, but he and his wife Celisse mentioned that he needed a haircut to a friend who told Abramov, who brought all his supplies to the hospital room to do it for free.

Days later, pictures of Chris before and after the haircut went viral among some East Meadow community groups. “Whatever they could have paid me wouldn’t have amounted to how it made me feel,” he said on seeing the Facebook post.

Abramov, 22, of Fresh Meadows, began giving haircuts to friends out of his house when he was 15 and started working at 17 before opening his business in East Meadow roughly two years ago.

“Being a barber is more than just cutting hair,” he said, explaining that he enjoys having conversations and being a friend to his customers. His friends call him lucky for having the ability to run a business at his age, “but they don’t know how much work goes into it,” he said with a laugh. “I love it though. I wouldn’t trade this job for the world.”
