On April 8, Nassau County police arrested two men found allegedly hiding inside a vacant Grand Avenue business. One of the men, police said, was carrying a loaded handgun.

Freeporter David Smith, 35, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal trespassing, and Westbury resident Hugh Brown, 28, was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing.

The NCPD said officers were conducting an investigation — the details of which are unknown — at 2432 Grand Ave. just after 8 p.m. on Monday when they say two men inside the locked and vacant building. The two cops knocked on the door, at which time Brown allegedly attempted to flee. Smith allegedly tried to hide something in the closet, which was later determined to be a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun.

Both defendants were arrested without incident, police said.
