“[They have] been a source of strength, comfort and solace to the scores of worshipers who have for over nine decades entered Temple Israel, to come together as a united family, in both good times and difficult times,” read a Temple Israel press release.

Though he said that he is grateful for the opportunity to visit the White House, his thoughts will remain on Long Beach while he is away. He said that he is looking forward to the change of scenery, but explained that he expects he will feel a sense of guilt to be honored while others’ efforts remain unrecognized.

“What about all of the other worthy people?” he said.

But Bauman plans to take advantage of the occasion to promote his congregation and community. Before the party, he will meet with members of the press to share Temple Israel and Long Beach’s story. Bauman said that he is, of course, excited to meet the president, and as a reserve chaplain in the Navy and the Marine Corps, the visit has taken on added significance.

“To go there in dress uniform, engage in proper salute and protocol with the highest ranking officials,” he said, “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
