Though Gennaro Jewelers has been in business in Bellmore for 95 years, the customer service remains similar to when Erwin Von der Heydt opened the store in May 1923, even as the community around it has changed drastically.

When customers walk into Gennaro Jewelers on Bedford Avenue, they may notice a sign hung above the doorway that reads, “The growth of any business is nurtured one customer at a time.” Gary Hudes, the shop’s owner, said his staff lives by the mantra and similar sayings posted around the store, which is among the reasons the shop has been in business for 90 years.

Holiday-season retail sales across the country rose about 5 percent over their 2008 levels, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And there are signs of recovery in the Bellmore-Merrick area as well. Many businesses have seen their sales improve since the bleak climate of 2008, but few have matched the level of activity five years ago, a Herald survey indicates.
