When an accident or crime occurs in the Bellmores, John Scalesi can often be found on the scene. Scalesi, 54, a lifelong Bellmore resident and a Mepham High School graduate, has served his home community as a volunteer since he was young. He is active in the Bellmore Fire Department and the Kiwanis and Lions clubs, and he’s an honorary lifetime member of the North Bellmore Fire Department’s Company No. 2.

The Bellmore Kiwanis and Lions Clubs co-hosted the 22nd annual Nassau County Strawberry Festival this past week. Residents from across Nassau County traveled to the BOCES building on Jerusalem Avenue in North Bellmore to enjoy the festivities, which kicked off last Wednesday.

About 40 members of the Merrick Kiwanis Club, the Calhoun High School Key Club and the Merrick Avenue Middle School Builders Club loaded up vans full of food and toys and distributed the goods among families throughout the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District last Sunday. Students at elementary schools in the Merrick and North Merrick school districts, along with the MAMS and Calhoun, collected the toys in recent weeks. The Kiwanis Club collected food donations outside of local supermarkets.
