A heavy rain could not stop hundreds from running or walking in the 11th annual Robbie’s Run at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick on May 22, as the event has continued to grow since its start in 2006. James Forte, a 17-year-old senior on the Calhoun High School track team, won the 5K for the second straight year, with a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds. more

When ticking off the many and varied phys. ed. programs that Saul Lerner has brought to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, you quickly realize what a profound and lasting impact he has had on the lives of thousands of students, his colleagues say. Among the programs are girls’ lacrosse, boys’ badminton, bicycling in gym classes, and first aid/cardiopulmonary resuscitation for all students, a program begun with the Merrick-based Robbie Levine Foundation, to name just a few. Lerner is the Central District’s director of physical education, health, athletics, driver’s education and adult education. After 19 years in the district and 35 years in education, Lerner, 58, will retire on June 30. “It’s been a great run,” he said during an interview last week, “and I loved every minute of it, and I love the community.” more

All 1,360 Calhoun High School students are now receiving potentially life-saving training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of the automated external defibrillator. By the end of the school year, all 5,562 students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District will be trained. more

The ninth annual Robbie’s Run will take place on Sunday, April 27, at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School and on the nearby streets of south Merrick. The event, which includes a 5K run, a one-mile mini-run and a half-mile children’s fun run, is held in memory of 9-year-old Robbie Levine, a Merokean who died of sudden cardiac arrest while running the bases during a Little League baseball practice in 2005. more

Two signs designating Levy-Lakeside School’s front baseball field as Forever 9 Field, which the Merrick-North Merrick Little League hung in April without permission from the Merrick School District, will remain up for the rest of the year, the Merrick Board of Education decided on June 4. The board also ruled that the Little League can apply in 2014 for permission to keep the signs up. more

Robbie’s Run, which commemorates 9-year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of heart failure in 2005 while rounding the bases during a Little League practice, attracted more than 1,700 participants between the annual event’s 5K, mile- and half-mile races through Merrick streets and fields on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Joseph Rocco, president of the Merrick-North Little League announced that the league was naming its front baseball field at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick as the “Forever 9: Robbie Levine Foundation Field." more
