Erin Metzger, 16, gave a buzz cut to Anthony Lunha, 11, at Calhoun High School’s March 17 fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants had their hair cut or shaved in solidarity with children with cancer, raising $48,000 for childhood cancer research.

Since 2007, Calhoun High School has raised more than $500,000 for childhood cancer research, according to Calhoun English teacher Peter Magnuson. The Merrick school passed the milestone on March 17 at its ninth annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser. more

Each class at Wellington C. Mepham High School did battle for a cause last week, as an annual spirit event became a fundraiser for a cancer charity. Battle of the Classes, which was organized by seniors in Chris Parren and Kerry Dennis’s Participation in Government class, was held in the Brookside School gymnasium on Nov. 14.
