While attending an ice hockey tournament in upstate Lake Placid in late January, Calhoun High School senior Austin McLoughlin sprung into action to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation after a player was struck in the head and suffered a seizure on the ice. more

Secrets to saving a life revealed at Merrick Avenue Middle School

Big, blue canvas bags labeled “Little Anne” and “Baby Anne” sat at the entrance to the Merrick Avenue Middle School gymnasium last Thursday. Spread across the shiny wooden floor in neat rows were mannequins, a.k.a. dummies. And in a corner, physical-education teachers Art Canestro, Mallory Cogen and Jason Dove were showing a film that revealed the secrets to saving a life with only your hands and mouth to a class of eighth-graders. Giving Central District students the power to save a life

Within six years, every student in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District should know how to save a life with cardiopulmonary resuscitation or an automated external defibrillator. That’s the hope of Merokean Jill Levine, executive director of Forever Nine: the Robbie Levine Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to equip school ball fields with AEDs and provide CPR/AED training to youth sports organizations. more
