Hurricane Sandy sent trees crashing into power lines throughout the Bellmores and Merricks. Hardest hit were south Bellmore and south Merrick, which, in addition to downed trees, also had to contend with severe flooding. On Monday, Nassau County was preparing to send electrical inspectors into flooded homes to make sure it was safe to turn the power back on.

A week after Hurricane Sandy lashed the South Shore with a 10-foot storm surge and hurricane-force wind gusts, Long Island Power Authority officials said on Nov. 5 that the utility had restored power to 675,000 of the 1.2 million customers who lost their electricity in the storm. At press time, Hurricane Irene was still barreling toward Long Island, forcing Bellmore-Merrick residents south of Merrick Road to evacuate, as per an order from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

Bellmore-Merrick residents evacuating ahead of Irene

At midday on Saturday, many Bellmore-Merrick residents living south of Merrick Road were seen packing up their belongings and piling into their vehicles, headed to higher ground ahead of Hurricane Irene, as per the mandatory evacuation order issued by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano on Friday. Others said they were still making up their minds whether to stay or go. And still others insisted they would ride out the storm at home. more
