Hundreds of runners from across the South Shore took part, along with entrants from around the world, including members of the London Fire Brigade. At the start of the race, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani gave runners high-fives and offered encouraging words as they headed to the tunnel.

On the other side of the East River, participants were met by long lines of New York City firefighters holding photos of their brethren who perished on 9/11, high school marching bands and cheerleading squads, and thousands of cheering spectators. A feast of hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza awaited runners at the finish line, and a three-hour concert, featuring Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, capped the event.
