Alumni, senator secure funds for Kennedy High School welcome sign

Bellmore-Merrick residents may notice something new while driving past John F. Kennedy High School: a “jumbo-tron” digital welcome sign, which was funded by alumni and a grant secured by State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr.

Members of Bellmore JFK Alumni, Inc. raised funds to purchase the sign with the senator’s help. Fuschillo, of Merrick, secured $40,000 for the project. An alumni association representative could not be reached to say how much the group contributed. Kennedy takes in students from Bellmore and Merrick.

School officials said the sign is the centerpiece of a beautification project supported by the state grant. Students, administrators and faculty members thanked Fuschillo and the alumni association for their donations at the May 31 sign unveiling.

Bellmore JFK Alumni, Inc. raises money for multiple projects to support the school and its students. The group has hosted several battle of the band events and other scholarship fundraisers in the two years since it began.
