Aside from showing that the assessment system is “more broken now than ever before,” the county is paying for the fact that improvements to local sewage treatment plants have been ignored, according to the legislator.

Denenberg said improvement projects at facilities like the Bay Park sewage treatment plant that he has championed since 2007 have been set aside by county officials. He said this contributed to Bay Park, which processes 65 million gallons of sewage per day, spilling millions of gallons of partially treated wastewater into Reynolds Channel after the storm.

“This administration has spent years trying to sell the plants rather than making capital improvements,” he said. “We saw the cost of that during Hurricane Sandy.”

The first full meeting of the Nassau County Legislature will be on Monday, Jan. 14.
