O’Brien was named lieutenant of Bellmore’s Engine Company No. 2 in 2007 and captain in 2009 and 2010, second assistant chief of the department in 2011 and first assistant chief in 2012, O’Brien said the chief’s office was a natural next step for him in 2013.

Another former Bellmore chief only had praise for O’Brien during his tenure as department head. Richard Messina, who is also a NYSAFC past president, said O’Brien was an elite chief.

“Chief O’Brien is one of the most advanced thinkers I know, with a cool and well-thought-out plan of attack in everything he does,” he said. “Chris is an asset to the fire service of Bellmore, Nassau County and New York state.”
