Bellmorite named attorney of the month

Posted

A Bellmorite was recently named the Nassau County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Month for September.

Scott Stone, whose practice is in East Rockaway, helps low-income tenants avoid homelessness. Through a program called the Volunteer Lawyers Project, he has provided pro bono legal representation to 62 clients facing eviction in two years. His “generosity and constant dedication” earned him the award, according to the bar association.

Stone maintains a general practice, a major part of which involves business transactions and corporate representation, commercial landlord/tenant work, real estate deals and tax-certiorari cases. He also serves as special counsel to the City of Glen Cove and the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale on tax-certiorari matters.

Stone, who earned his law degree from Hofstra University, also defends against or forestalls eviction of low-income clients in the hope of preserving housing or giving the tenants time to secure alternate housing and avoid shelters or the streets. He is connected to the clients through the Volunteer Lawyers Project, which provides pro bono assistance to ensure that low-income, disabled and disadvantaged individuals have equal access to the civil justice system on Long Island.

The program is a project of the Nassau County Bar Association and the Nassau-Suffolk Law Services Committee. Founded in 1899, the bar association comprises private and public attorneys, judges, legal educators and law students. Members said they demonstrate their commitment to the community by offering a variety of services, including lawyer referrals, mortgage foreclosure services, senior citizen legal clinics and Hurricane Sandy recovery.

Stone and his wife, Elyse, have two young daughters, Maya and Dana.
