Car flips in Sunrise Highway crash

Posted

One person was seriously injured in a collision that caused a car to flip on its side on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore last weekend, officials said.

Members of the Nassau County Police and the Bellmore Fire departments responded to a two-car accident near Sunrise and Newbridge Road around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. One motorist, who was heading east, was traveling at a high speed before colliding with another driver.

Vincent Scaduto, public information officer for the Bellmore Fire Department, said one of the cars flipped from the impact of the collision, skidding through a fence lining the path of the Long Island Rail Road tracks and into a ditch.

Police needed to extricate the driver and one passenger in the overturned car using a rescue tool called the Jaws of Life. Officials did not identify them. The injured were rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment. Scaduto noted that one person was hospitalized in serious condition.

Fire officials assisted police on the scene with patient care, Scaduto said. They also stood by in case a fire broke out during the extrication process.
