Fourth-graders showcase their spelling skills

Posted

Putting their knowledge of the English language to use, fourth-graders at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School took part in the school’s annual spelling bee on Dec. 10.

To qualify for the bee, the 14 participants first had to compete in in-class bees. After their in-class wins, the students spent two weeks learning the rules of the bee and practicing spelling new words. The youngsters then took to the stage in front of their classmates, teachers, administrators and parents to compete for the honor of spelling bee champion.

Following a 15-minute battle between the final two contestants, William Fischetti was named the winner after correctly spelling sensitive and furniture. Antonino Scimeca was the runner-up.
