Grand Avenue teacher recognized

Grand Avenue Middle School science teacher Kenneth Abbot was honored by the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education at its Dec. 3 meeting.

Abbot was recently awarded the prestigious Science Teachers Association of New York State 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award for the Intermediate Level. Abbot was presented the award at the 119th annual STANYS Conference in Rochester on Nov. 3.

Abbott has filled several roles in the Central District during his 24-year tenure. At Grand Avenue, he is the veteran Regents earth science teacher and is a leader in the science department. Abbott has also coached numerous sports and taken on a host of responsibilities, including his role as the Honor Society adviser.

Abbott received the Central District’s Ann Crowley Award for Excellence in Professional Development. He has served as an earth science subject area representative for the Long Island region, and he serves as vice president of the New York State Earth Science Teachers Association.
