Kennedy Sports Boosters gears up for 2014-15

Posted

Kennedy Sports Boosters was reinvented this past school year. A small group of interested parents, led by Bob Pizzimenti, began meeting and discussing how to best serve the school’s student athletes in a supportive role. Over the past year Kennedy Sports Boosters grew from eight to 130 members.

In June 2013, with little money and a lot of enthusiasm, the Sports Boosters gave scholarships and hosted a dessert reception during the athletes’ Awards Night. The Sports Boosters repeated that reception for the senior student athletes of 2014.

As a growing organization, the Kennedy Sports Boosters contributed to several teams this past year. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams received banners, which they proudly hung at every home game. And new chairs with the Kennedy name and Cougar mascot were bought for all basketball games, wrestling matches, volleyball games, badminton matches and any other indoor sporting events held in the Kennedy gym.

Additionally, the Sports Boosters, working alongside the Kennedy Student Government, sponsored two Jam the Gym nights, which featured an exciting half-court shot in which one non-player had the chance to win $10,000.

The Kennedy boys’ volleyball team made it to states this year, and the Sports Boosters paid for a team dinner. For a select number of games, the Boosters painted the football field. And, in the spring, the Boosters helped the boys’ lacrosse and baseball teams with supplies they needed.

To raise money apart from membership dues, merchandise, including Kennedy sweats and T-shirts, was sold at football games. Additionally, food supplied by local vendors was sold at football games. The Sports Boosters also partnered with Kennedy’s cooking classes to prepare and sell food.

A cold winter night did not stop supporters from coming out to a fun and successful Comedy Night fundraiser and memorabilia auction at the Brokerage in Bellmore.
