Kennedy hosts a fiery Homecoming

Kennedy High’s Homecoming was ablaze with school spirit, on and off the football field, last Friday.

Homecoming festivities were held at the school, which takes in students from parts of Bellmore and Merrick, on Oct. 23. Not only was “Cougar Nation” treated to an upset victory by the varsity football team, but students and alumni also embraced the school’s bonfire tradition.

The fun began at 4 p.m. when the Homecoming festival, sponsored by Kennedy’s student government, opened. Teens enjoyed food, live music and games at the carnival-style event, all while preparing for the bonfire.

Principal Lorraine Poppe said she believes Kennedy is one of the few Long Island high schools that still has a Homecoming bonfire. Bellmore Fire Department volunteers controlled the blaze.

The football game kicked off at 7 p.m. The Cougars took on the New Hyde Park Gladiators under the lights. The Kennedy team scored with only a minute left in the game, winning in dramatic style, 28-21.

Kennedy supporters were also treated to performances by the band, cheerleaders and kickliners, as well as a ceremony for the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen. Alex Dobosh was named king and Ashley Jarzabek was the queen.
