Support the school board incumbents

To the Editor:
The upcoming school board election is as important, if not more important, than the presidential election. Other than your income tax, school taxes are probably the highest taxes you will pay in a year, and that amount is voted on by the seven people on the Lynbrook school board.
This year I am putting my vote behind incumbents William Belmont and Heather Hanson. I have served alongside William for the last several years, and I see him as a strong leader with good ideas and probing questions. He makes all of the students a priority, participating in the athletic program as a volunteer coach and as an announcer for many of the Challenger basketball games.
William has been to robotics events as well as music events, and is always enthusiastic — especially when he is pushing for a Mock Trial team.
Heather Hanson has done many of those same things over the past three years she’s been on the board. She attends a wide variety of events, and recently attended the National School Boards Association’s annual meeting, along with her fellow board members and Lynbrook faculty. Heather has been an active board member and has most recently been the secretary of the board.
While the other community members running for the board are all doing so for the betterment of the schools, they lack the experience necessary for continued positive growth of the district. Being a board member means letting go of personal agendas and working as a team. We have to create the best school experience for every student, and this is not easy in an era of tax caps.
William and Heather have shown they can be fiscally responsible as well as push forward new programs. Get out and vote on May 17, as your vote definitely counts. I can attest to that fact because last year, I won by only two votes. While you are voting, It’s worth noting that the budget increase is at an all-time low, so I ask you to please support the budget as well as William and Heather.
