Sonic 'boom' reported across the South Shore

Nassau County police received multiple reports of a loud, explosive sound on the South Shore on Wednesday, Sept. 21, around 2 p.m., according to officials. At press time, police were still working to determine its exact origin.

Malverne police officials also said they had received several reports of the sound, from Malverne, Rockville Centre and Franklin Square.

One resident described the sound as an extremely loud "boom," but could not say where it might have come from. It was loud enough to shake houses, he said.

John Madden, the Oceanside fire chief, said that he received a report that it was fighter jets headed to John F. Kennedy Airport to escort Air Force One. Other fire chiefs had heard similar reports. They were, however, unconfirmed.

New York City police were reporting that the sound was F-22s over Kennedy Airport.
