Mepham alive with ‘The Sound of Music’

The Mepham High School auditorium was alive with “The Sound of Music” last weekend, as students staged their annual spring musical.

The Skull and Bones Drama Club at produced several performances of “The Sound of Music” – the classic Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical - from March 27 to 29. Bellmorites of all ages came to the school to see performers from several local schools in the production.

This year, Mepham formed a partnership with the North Bellmore District’s music department to bring elementary school students to the high school stage. Edward Grosskreuz, a Mepham English teacher and the Skull and Bones adviser who directed “The Sound of Music,” said this is the first time that he worked with younger children on a production in the six years that he has overseen the club.

The play tells the story of Maria von Trapp, a former nun who leaves the convent to become a governess for the seven children of a wealthy Austrian widower. Since children are central characters in the piece, Grosskreuz casted Molly Walsh (Martin Avenue Elementary School), Jack McDonagh (Saw Mill Road Elmentary School) and Halle Wunderman (Park Avenue Elementary School) to play Gretl, Kurt and Marta von Trapp, respectively.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District officials said the production of the beloved musical took the audience through famous songs such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “The Sound of Music” and “So Long, Farewell.” Sabrina Garone, who played Liesl von Trapp, previously told the Herald Life that last weekend’s crowds could expect a standout performance from Alana DeGregorio, who played Maria.

Kevin Burns served as assistant director for the production, while Brie Piccirillo was the choreographer. Michael Mitchell provided vocal music direction, and Brian Neiderman offered instrumental musical direction.
