North Bellmore library celebrates grandparents

Posted

North Bellmore children recently celebrated some of the most important people in their lives at the library: their grandparents.

North Bellmore Public Library officials organized a special program on Sunday, Sept. 7, in honor of Grandparents’ Day. The holiday has been celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day since President Jimmy Carter declared it a national holiday in 1978.

Marian McQuade, a West Virginia homemaker who died in 2008, founded Grandparents’ Day. She wanted to help lonely older adults living in nursing homes, according to grandparents-day.com. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage that their grandparents could provide.

At the North Bellmore library program, children’s librarian Jane Sullivan read stories to children and their grandparents. Participants then did some crafting, creating mobiles that spoke to the grandparent-grandchild bond.
