A North Bellmore lawyer was recently named the 111th president of the Nassau County Bar Association.

Peter Mancuso, 59, was sworn into his position with the largest suburban bar association in the country when Marian Rice’s one-year term ended on May 31. Mancuso is the first assistant district attorney to be elected as the organization’s president since it was founded in 1899.

The Nassau County Bar Association has nearly 6,000 members, including private and public attorneys, judges, legal educators and law students. The organization offers a variety of programs for the public, including lawyer referral services, mortgage foreclosure, Hurricane Sandy recovery and senior citizen free legal clinics, judicial screening, public education programs and support for the Volunteer Lawyers Project, which provides free legal services for the poor.

Mancuso is a 34-year member of the group and previously served as dean of their Nassau Academy of Law. He has been on the bar’s board of directors for the past eight years.

Mancuso said that, as the organization’s president, he wants to continue to add value to the legal profession by increasing the number of its active committees and focusing on important issues for attorneys who have not traditionally been involved in the bar. Currently, the association offers 51 committees for attorneys to keep current with the law and legal decisions, hear from expert speakers and assist the organization.

Another goal that Mancuso set for his term is to increase the association’s philanthropic efforts. The bar’s charitable arm, the We Care Fund, assists children, the elderly and others in need throughout the county.

“We look forward to continuing to assist our neighbors in Bellmore and all the residents of Nassau County through the Nassau County Bar Association, the source for legal information and education on Long Island,” he said.

Mancuso noted that he also plans to strengthen the bar by increasing revenue streams, controlling expenses and reviewing governance structures to make changes to benefit the bar in the long run. And he plans to develop an overall strategic plan for the future.
