Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman, 39, has been named to the Long Island Business News 40 Under 40 Class of 2017, a prestigious award that honors young business and community leaders.

Since 1998, Long Island Business News has taken nominations for outstanding members of the business community on Long Island who are under the age of 40. These future leaders of Long Island have already begun to distinguish themselves in business, government, education and the not-for-profit sector. The awards dinner is taking place on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Since he was named city manager in 2012, Schnirman has managed Long Beach’s day-to-day operations, including the city’s police, fire, public works, parks and recreation, and economic development and planning departments. Serving as the city's chief executive before, during, and after Superstorm Sandy, he was responsible for leading all aspects of government response, including disaster preparations, mandatory evacuation, emergency response operations, and long-term recovery. Schnirman is now overseeing more than $150 million in rebuilding efforts to protect both the ocean and bay sides of the barrier island.

He is a member of the International City Manager’s Association, the New York Conference of Mayors, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and the Truman National Security Project’s Partnership Program. Schnirman has served as a career advisor to the NYU Wagner School of Public Service’s Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service, the Achievement First Charter School network, and the New Leaders Council, serving as co-chair of the Curriculum Committee. He is also a member of Energia Partnership and the Regional Economic Development Council’s infrastructure working group, and he has served on the board of the Long Island Chapter of the New York League of Conservation Voters.

Schnirman, a Democrat who is considering a run for Nassau County executive next year, holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a B.A. in International Relations from Tufts University. He lives in Long Beach with his wife, Joan, and their daughter, Sage.
