Tree lighting brightens rainy weekend

Posted

Rainy weather couldn’t stop Bellmore residents from celebrating the holidays last weekend, as crowds of local folks gathered in Bellmore Village for the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores’ annual Holiday Extravaganza on Dec. 5.

Attendees grabbed their umbrellas and headed to the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Broadway to take part in a litany of yuletide activities. Folks had the chance to ride a trolley through the community, take a horse-and-carriage ride to check out local homes decorated for the season, buy holiday treats from the Bellmore Kiwanis Club and take photos with Santa Claus.

The event’s climax was the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. Before and after the tree was lit at the Long Island Rail Road station, carolers from schools throughout the Bellmores sang holiday songs. Members of Bellmore’s Connect Church also acted out a live nativity.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m., the chamber will mark the start of Hanukkah by lighting a large menorah near Bedford and Broadway. More information about the event is available on the chamber website
