A van carrying five disabled passengers careeened off the Southern State Parkway in North Merrick around 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 and crashed into a tree, according to James Rogers, the North Merrick Fire Department chief.

All five passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken as a precautionary measure to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment and observation, the chief said.

He was uncertain what caused the accident, he said. It did not apparently involve other cars. In addition to North Merrick, the North Bellmore, East Meadow and Wantagh fire departments responded, along with Nassau County police.

In a separate incident, a 14-year-old girl was struck by a car on Camp Avenue in North Merrick last Thursday around 5 p.m. Rogers did not have details about how the accident happened. “The girl was laying in the road when I got there,” he said.

The girl suffered multiple fractures in her leg. She was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where she was treated and spent the next couple of days recuperating. The chief said he had heard an unconfirmed report that she was released from the hospital. No other information on the girl’s condition was available.
