Virgin Mary statue decapitated at Bellmore Knights of Columbus Hall

Posted

A statue of the Virgin Mary in front of the Bellmore Knights of Columbus Hall was found decapitated on Thursday, Nassau County Police said.

Seventh Squad detectives are investigating what they called an act of criminal mischief. They said the statue – which has been vandalized in the past – was damaged sometime between midnight on May 13 and 10 a.m. on May 14.

Police said an unknown suspect knocked the head off the statue, located at the hall at 2333 Bellmore Ave. Police are now investigating similar incidents that occurred last summer and winter.

The Knights of Columbus Hall statue was also knocked over on July 16, 2013, police said. And authorities are examining damage to a nativity scene near Bellmore’s holiday tree, at Bedford Avenue and Broadway, on Dec. 28.

Detectives ask anyone with information about these incidents to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
