Students from W.T. Clarke Middle School and Woodland Middle School won several awards during East Meadow’s first time taking part in the Long Island History Day event at Hofstra University in March.

One pair of students advanced to the New York State History Day contest, which took place in Cooperstown on April 29.

W.T. Clarke Middle School students, Faith Fuller and Shreejita Satpathy, earned fourth place in the Junior Group Documentary category for their project “Frances Oldham Kelsey: The Thalidomide Crisis.” This placement made them eligible for the state contest.

Umme Hani Bootwaia and Muaraka Ezzi of W.T Clarke Middle School received the Science History Award, sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, for their junior group exhibit, “A Heavy Water Sabotage: Operation Gunnerside.” Meanwhile, Maya Del Rosario of Woodland Middle School was awarded the Latin American History Award, sponsored by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, for her junior individual exhibit, “Diego’s Art Triumphs Over the Tragedy of the Great Depression.”
