Making the challah in Hewlett

Children 4 to 12 got to knead the dough in preparation of making the traditional Jewish bread at the fourth annual grand challah bake at the Chabad House of Hewlett on April 12. The 90-minute sold out event engaged the kids and had parents and grandparents kvelling.

Challah can come in three different forms. Braided challah is made with eggs and is the bread for Shabbos and holidays. Folklore and tradition enfold challah and it’s loaded with symbolism. Cut rectangular challah is called bulkah. Sweet tasting challahs with honey or raisins are baked for the festive holidays to help create a joyous atmosphere.
