Saltwater inundated the front entrance and back laundry room. She did not realize, however, that water had soaked through her plywood subfloor when her crawl space flooded.

There has been a lot of progress made in the rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island in late October, but there is still work to be done. The Long Island Volunteer Center is in need of volunteers to help those impacted by the storm.

Weeks after Hurricane Sandy damaged much of the South Shore of Nassau County, residents are continuing to pick up the pieces and return to their normal lives. The East Rockaway community took a big step in the road to recovery last week when students went back to school — although for hundreds of students, it was with a change of scenery.
