Senator Dean Skelos joins local village and library officials for the week-long 80th anniversary celebration of the Lynbrook Library, held Oct. 19-24.

A roaming barbershop quartet, Dixieland musicians “Crazy Henry and Banjo Bob”, and outdoor inflatable rides, and a ribbon cutting for the new outdoor Reading Garden were part of the Lynbrook Library’s week-long 80th Anniversary celebration held October 19 -25.

On the final day of the celebration, the library was transformed into an 18-hole mini golf course 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. A fee was charged to play or watch, with all proceeds to be used to support the Friends of the Lynbrook Library, which funds library programs and services.

Mayor Brian Curran, Deputy Mayor Bill Hendrick, Trustees Alan Beach, Hilary Becker and Michael Hawxhurst, and New York State Senator Dean G. Skelos joined with library officials and residents to celebrate the ribbon cutting and anniversary.

. Located between the Library and the Municipal parking lot, the Reading Garden features benches and attractive landscaping. The Library and the Friends of the Lynbrook Library worked closely with the Lynbrook DPW and Beautification Committee to complete the project.

Not only will the garden be relaxing and peaceful for reading, it will also serve as an outdoor programming area for the Library. The Children’s librarians are already planning “Picnic Story times.” The Library will encourage its adult discussion group and book discussion groups to use the area as well. The Library plans on holding gardening programs, in which along with the Village Beautification Committee, children will plant in the area.

“On days when the weather is too nice to be inside, we look forward to seeing the Reading Garden in full bloom with readers.” said Library Director Robyn Gilloon. “We know that the residents and members of the library will find the Reading Garden a great addition to the community and the library,”

The Reading Garden will have something for everyone who uses the Library; a quiet place to sit and read, an area for children to learn and most of all a place our Library and Village can be proud of,” said Regina Flaherty, president of the library board.
