New red light cameras installed in East Meadow

Implemented at corner of Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Ave.

Drivers who run a red light at the intersection at Hempstead Turnpike and Merrick Avenue will now be caught on camera by the  county’s newly installed Red Light Camera.

As part of Nassau County’s “Nassau Stops on Red” — Red Light Program, there is already a camera at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Newbridge Road in East Meadow. There are also cameras in Westbury at Merrick Avenue and Stewart Avenue, and Old country Road and Post Avenue/Merrick Avenue. There is one red light camera in Salisbury at Old Country Road and School Street/Salisbury Park Drive.

The cameras are installed to change driver behavior in Nassau County where red light running is a problem.     The program, which was passed by the state legislature last year, also serves as a revenue source for the county, which faces a major budget gap.

The cameras record all the information needed to prove the driver ran a red light including the phase of the light at the time of the violation, how long the light was red, a frame sequence of photos, and the location the violation occurred.

Recorded images and video of the violation will be submitted as evidence in the Traffic and Parking Violations Agency proceeding for disposition of the violation. The violation does not go on the driver’s record or carry points, but there is no way to reduce the charge of the violation. Payments for the violation can be paid in person, in the mail, or online at the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency’s website.
