Memorial Day started as Decoration Day, and it was first observed at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on May 30, 1868, three years after the Civil War reached its bloody conclusion.

Gerard “Jerry” Barbosa, who survived Japanese war planes attacks while stationed on the USS Raleigh as a gunner’s mate at Pearl Harbor, died on Sept. 15, at age 93, of natural causes.
