Walter Lowden vividly remembers Dec. 5, 1950, when the Front Street School, where he had graduated from a year earlier, burned down. His uncle drove him there, and he watched as the school, on the corner of East Meadow Avenue and Front Street, was alit in flames. "We witnessed it with interest and awe,” said Lowden, now 78.

A new East Meadow restaurant, Anzai, opened its doors on July 22 on Front Street, and after less than one month of business, I ate lunch in what seemed like an already well-established eatery. As Bo Ding, the restaurant’s manager, explained the process of becoming an up-and-running restaurant, I admired the fast service, fresh sushi rolls and calm atmosphere.
