Rolling River Day Camp sits on five acres along Mill River, which snakes through East Rockaway and Bay Park on the way to East Rockaway Channel. The river can be a friend. It forms an idyllic backdrop for a camp replete with swimming pools, playgrounds and ball fields. It can also be a foe. During a nor’easter in 2010, Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the river inundated much of the camp, wreaking havoc. more

EMHS alum’s golf event set for April 21

The “Dormie to Dorm Golf Showcase” is set for Monday, April 21 at the Brookville Country Club. The event, started by Andrew Richter — a 1999 East Meadow High School graduate who now lives in Syosset — aims to assist high school golfers with their game, while also networking them with collegiate golf coaches for potential recruitment. more

Children at Merrick Woods, a day camp on Merrick Avenue near the Merrick and East Meadow border, took part in a cavalcade of games and competitions last week as part of the camp’s Olympics. In between the opening ceremonies on Wednesday and closing ceremonies on Friday, campers played sports, ran relays, jumped rope, climbed over obstacles, learned cheers, wrote sing-a-longs, made banners, and carried out a scavenger hunt. more

Coleman Country Day Campers were ecstatic when New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford, No. 5, visited the Merrick camp on Monday and spent the day talking with campers, signing autographs and passing around his Super Bowl ring.

A 'Giant' day at Coleman Country Day Camp

As if straight out of a television commercial, a young camper asked New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford the question — “Since you’ve just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?” No, he did not say, “I’m going to Disney World.” Instead, Weatherford smiled and said, “I’m going to Coleman Country Day Camp.” The response evoked raucous applause from the hundreds of Coleman Country Day campers who looked on in awe at the recent Super Bowl champion. more
