A man and a woman, who police identified as "homeless," are in serious condition after being struck by an 80-year-old male driver on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow on Sunday, who then fled the scene.

Nassau County police say that Oliver Blakeman, who lives in East Meadow, was driving westbound on the turnpike at around 7 p.m. when is 2005 Dodge Caravan hit the man and woman, who were crossing the street in the direction of Eisenhower Park.

Blakeman, who left the scene, was located on Merrick Avenue and Webster Street with his car, and was placed under arrest without incident.

The man and woman have not been identified, but police say they were transported to a local hospital, and are in serious condition with multiple trauma injuries.

Blakeman is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injuries, and was released on an appearance ticket. He is due back in First District Court in Hempstead on Oct. 7.

His Dodge Caravan was impounded for brake and safety checks.
