The Town of Hempstead crowned nine winners of its 2014 Recycle Poster contest on Monday at Levy Park in Merrick. Two of the winners were elementary school students in the East Meadow School District.

Adrianna Como, a third-grader at McVey Elementary School, and Sheila Lorentzen, of Parkway Middle School, were the local winners.

The winning works of art will be prominently displayed on Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation garbage and recycling trucks on a rotating basis.

Other contest winners were from Baldwin, Oceanside, Seaford and Uniondale schools. Murray presented the winning student artists with $25 certificates donated by Westbury Paper Stock, who sponsored the event. Hundreds of students participated in the contest.

“This poster contest educates youngsters about recycling, while also assisting us in achieving our environmental goals,” Murray said. “I look forward to seeing their works of art displayed on sanitation trucks across our town.”
